The STCW BST requirements are contained in Reg. VI/1 of the STCW code. BST is required for those persons serving in a position that must be filled as part of the required crew complement or assigned a responsibility on the muster list. This training is comprised of four elements: personal survival techniques, fire prevention and fire fighting, elementary first aid, and personal safety and social responsibilities.

Personal Survival Techniques (12Hours).  This course is designed to provide mariners with an overview of basic maritime personal survival.  The student will be instructed in the proper lifesaving techniques to help themselves and their shipmates when needed.

Equipment needed: Long Pants, long-sleeved shirt with a collar, shoes to swim in, towel, and something to place your wet clothes in after class. (trash bag)

Basic Fire Fighting (16 Hours). This course is designed to train all seafarers in minimizing the risk of fire, maintaining state of readiness to respond to fires, and fighting and extinguishing fires.

Equipment needed: Work Clothes and shoes (something you don't mind getting wet) sun screen, and a hat.

Elementary First Aid / CPR (8 Hours). This course is designed to train all seafarers in providing lifesaving first aid until the arrival of more qualified medical personnel.

 Personal Safety and Social Responsibility (PSSR) (4 Hours). 
This course is designed to train all seafarers in complying with emergency procedures, preventing pollution of the marine environment, observing safe work practices, providing clear and effective communications aboard ship, and maintaining good interpersonal relationships.
